The night was lit up on Wednesday when a giant meteor streaked across the Midwestern sky. Sightings of the fireball were reported in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. It is still uncertain where and if any of the meteor landed on earth.
Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through the trail of cosmic dust and debris left behind by a comet or occasionally an asteroid. Most of the meteor trails occur high up in the atmosphere and have no impact on the surface, but on rare occasions, meteorites can survive the fall.
There is a meteor shower currently occurring called the Gamma Virginids, it began April 4 and is expected to last through April 21. A better-known meteor shower, known as the Lyrids, is just beginning and is expected to peak April 22.
The people of Poland lost their President and 95 other military, politicians, and cultural elite in a plane crash on Saturday. The crash occurred in thick fog near the Katyn forest, where Josef Stalin’s secret police in 1940 executed thousands of Polish military officers in the western Soviet Union. President Lech Kaczynski and those aboard had been headed there to honor the dead.
Apparently the crew was warned not to land because of the bad conditions, but the pilot continued to land and hit some trees which caused the plane to crash. The Polish Government wanted to replace the airplane last year but didn’t have the funds to do so.
This tragedy is unfortunate for the country of Poland. They haven’t exactly had it easy and this was the last thing that they needed or any country for that matter. My condolences and prayers go out the country of Poland.
Suicide attackers detonated three car bombs near embassies in Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 42 people and wounding more than 200 in back-to-back bombings. Authorities said they stopped two other attacks aimed at diplomatic targets.
The blasts went off within minutes of each other — one near the Iranian Embassy and two others in an area that houses several embassies, including the Egyptian Consulate, and the German and Spanish embassies. A witness said that cars were crashing into each other, children were screaming, and people were fleeing from all of the smoke.
